Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Haemodialysis?
Haemodialysis involves a filtering process to remove water and harmful wastes. Blood is pumped through a plastic tubing to a filtering device called a “dialyser” or “artificial kidney”.
Why do I need to do haemodialysis?
You need dialysis if your kidneys no longer remove enough wastes and fluid from your blood to keep you healthy. This usually happens when you have only 10 to 15 percent of your kidney function left.
How often do I need to be on haemodialysis?
Every haemodialysis will be individualised but generally for an average-sized individual it takes an average of 4 hours per session and 3 treatments a week. You will need to travel to the dialysis centre and there is normally a fixed dialysis schedule for you.
How much is a haemodialysis treatment?
Each treatment for patient who undergoes haemodialysis at a private centre cost between RM200 to RM230 per session.
Do I need to eat a special diet?
Yes. Generally speaking, patients on dialysis are advised to increase their protein intake and limit the amount of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid in their diet. Patients with diabetes or other health conditions may have additional diet restrictions. It's important to talk with our dietitian about your individual diet needs.
Can dialysis patients continue to work?
Yes. Many dialysis patients continue to work or return to work after they have gotten used to dialysis. If your job has a lot of physical labour (heavy lifting, digging, etc.), you may need to change your duties.
